Jill Smith

Biography

My background is fine arts/painting. I have exhibited extensively in the past and as a result of an Australia Council Grant in 1992, to explore the use of computer tools for design I came across 3D scanners in California and ceramic 3D printing at MIT in Boston. The result being an artist in residence at MIT's Mechanical Engineering Department in 1994 and importing the first 3D scanners in early 1995. For the past 25+ years I have been involved in 3D scanning and software development for manipulating 3D geometry, be it scanned or otherwise. This included 15 years based at Fox Studios in Sydney. A lot of those years have been involved in working purely with a 3D model within the computer space. In the past 10 years I have decided to revisit my art practice and explore taking the virtual into the real world taking advantage of the experience of the past 25+.
